REAL EXPERIENCE for Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge
Yery Marrero was born in 1961 in Bayamo, Cuba. She fled Cuba, together with her parents, and came to the United States when she was three years old. At the time Yery’s family left Cuba her father was in law school and years later, her attending law school was the fulfillment of the family’s dream cut short. While in Cuba, the family had a proud history of public service; her paternal grandfather was the Mayor of Bayamo. It is only natural that Yery would choose to run for a judicial office which is focused on serving the citizens of Miami-Dade.
Yery is a graduate of Miami Coral Park High School. She continued her education and graduated from Florida State University and then received her law degree from Loyola University School of Law in New Orleans. After law school, she returned home to Miami and devoted herself to public service by joining the Miami-Dade Public Defender’s Office. Yery’s career as an Assistant Public Defender started with her handling minor offenses in county court and progressed to her handling major crimes in circuit court. After almost ten years, she left the office and opened her own private practice. In 2000, she co-founded Marrero Bozorgi, a boutique firm dedicated to representing clients under investigation or charged with state and federal criminal offenses. Yery has litigated in courts throughout the country and has extensive trial experience. She has been practicing law in Florida for twenty-eight years. Yery is also active in the greater legal and local community, both as a member of professional boards and as a legal analyst and commentator on Spanish-language television. She was previously appointed to serve on the DUI Review Board for the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles by the then Florida Governor. She was also appointed to serve as a Traffic Magistrate for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit for Miami-Dade by the then Chief Judge, and has served on a Florida Bar Grievance Committee. She is a member of the Cuban American Bar Association, Miami Dade County Bar Association, American Bar Association, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Women White Collar Defense Association, and the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. She served on the national board for Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund for many years and on their National Leadership Council. She served as President of her neighborhood homeowner’s association in Coconut Grove. Yery currently serves as the Chair of the Board of Trustees of her daughter’s school, St Stephen’s Episcopal Day School. She is a member of the Florida Bar, the United District Court for the Southern District of Florida, the United District Court for the Middle District of Florida, and the United States Supreme Court. For many years, Yery has been recognized by Martindale-Hubbell as an AV® Preeminent™ attorney, the highest rating available for an individual lawyer. In 2017, her firm, Marrero Bozorgi, PL was named in Best Lawyers© Best Law Firms from U.S. News and World Report. |
